Getting to SD

We hope you will be able to join us in sunny San Diego for our wedding! We understand that most guests will be flying in for the wedding so we have a few tips based on our experience.

The airport

San Diego International Airport is the busiest single-runway airport in the USA. This is because downtown has grown right up against the airport–there’s no more room for runways!

The downside of this is that those flying in from cities with non-hub airports will likely need to book connecting flights. The upside is that because the airport is so close to downtown, you will not need to travel far to get to your hotel.

SAN is a secondary hub for Alaska Airlines, so you may prefer to book an Alaska flight if you don’t have a frequent-flyer preference for another airline.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

A few travel tips depending on your desired primary mode of transit when you arrive in San Diego:

  • Rental car: The airport rental car center is a 5-10 min shuttle bus ride away from the terminals, and you may need to wait several minutes for your shuttle bus to leave. Please be mindful of this when scheduling your rental car pickup based on your flight arrival time.
  • Taxi: Both terminals have a taxi stand if you would like to call a car without waiting for an app. Taxis departing the airport are comparably priced with Lyft/Uber and sometimes slightly cheaper.
  • Lyft/Uber: You can call these from the terminal pretty easily and the passenger waiting zones are a short walk from the terminal doors. Monica has sometimes had issues with drivers ghosting airport pickups, but there should usually be drivers waiting in the cell phone lot for airport rides.
  • Public transit: The 992 bus stops a short walk from the terminal doors on the departure level and runs directly into downtown. Most downtown hotels should be a 15-min walk at most from the downtown stop.

Hotels

To maximize access to activities and proximity to Balboa Park/the wedding venue, we recommend you search for hotels in the downtown/Gaslamp Quarter areas southwest of Balboa Park.
